S

PRECIOUS ANIMALS

Client: TraditioNow, China
Design: Lisa Smith , in cooperation with the illustrator Shannon McNeill
Year: 2020

Yunjin Brocade is one of the most precious and ancient of Chinese hand crafts. It is famous for its delicate silk weaving technique, luscious use of colour and precious materials such as gold and silver threads. It is an endangered hand craft since the artisans who are able to weave this brocade are becoming scarce. Precious Animals is a silk Brocade woven textile representing six, beautiful but dangerously endangered animals indigenous to China: the golden pheasant, the golden snub-nosed monkey, the Tibetan Gazelle, the Chinese Pangolin, the Chinese Green Peacock and the Blue-eared Kingfisher bird. The animals were abstracted into papercut silhouettes and woven in gold threads, fading away like their endangered species into the dark silk background.
